How to Show Up in Google's Map Results in Connecticut

Two hands holding a phone up in bright daylight on a street

When someone searches "plumber near me" or "roofer Danbury," Google puts a small map near the top with a short list of businesses under it. That block gets a large share of the clicks, and for a local trade it matters more than anything else on the page.

The useful thing about this is that Google publishes how it works. You do not have to guess.

The three factors, in Google's words

Google names relevance, distance, and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches what was searched. Distance is how far you are from the person searching. Prominence is how well known your business is, which Google describes as including how many websites link to you and how many reviews you have.

Read that list again, because the order people usually work on it is exactly backwards.

Distance: you cannot change it, so stop trying

Distance is measured from the searcher, not from your office. This has two consequences that most local SEO advice skips.

First, there is no version of this where a business in New Fairfield outranks everyone for searches happening in Stamford. Trades travel, but the map does not care how far you are willing to drive. If most of your work comes from towns you are not near, the map is not the channel that will bring it.

Second, and more usefully: your ranking is different for every person searching. When you check your own position, you are seeing your position from where you are standing. It tells you almost nothing about what a customer three towns over sees.

Relevance: the part nobody fills in

Relevance is the cheapest factor to improve and the most neglected. It comes down to whether your profile actually says what you do.

  • The primary category is the single most important field. Pick the one that names your trade exactly, not the broadest one that technically includes it. "Roofing contractor" and "general contractor" send very different signals.
  • Services are a separate list, and most profiles leave it empty. Add every specific job you take. If someone searches for the thing, and the thing is not on your profile, you are not relevant to it.
  • Write a description that names the work and the towns. Not marketing language. The words a customer would actually type.
  • Photos count. Profiles with real photos of real work get engaged with more, and engagement feeds back into how Google reads relevance.

None of this requires a consultant. It requires an hour and honesty about what you do.

Prominence: reviews and links

Prominence is where the ranking is usually won or lost, and Google is direct about one half of it: more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking.

That does not mean buying them or fishing only for the good ones. Both of those violate Google's policies and can cost you the profile. There is a way to do this that works and stays inside the rules, which we wrote about separately in how to ask for Google reviews without being awkward about it.

The other half is links and mentions. Being listed accurately in local directories, your chamber of commerce, supplier pages, and anywhere else your trade appears all contribute. What matters is that your name, address, and phone match exactly everywhere, which is covered in the local SEO basics.

What does not work

Keyword stuffing your business name. Renaming yourself "Danbury Best Emergency Plumber LLC" when that is not your registered name is a policy violation, and competitors report it.

A second profile for a second town. One business, one profile, unless you genuinely have a second staffed location.

Paying for a "ranking service" that will not say what it does. If someone cannot explain which of the three factors they are moving and how, they are moving none of them.

The order that actually works

Fill in the profile completely. Get the categories and services right. Then work on reviews, steadily, forever. Then worry about your website.

The website matters, but it is downstream of this. A well-built site supports the profile and gives people somewhere to land when they want more than a phone number, which is a separate question from whether you need one at all. It just is not where the map ranking comes from.

If you want a site that supports the profile instead of competing with it, here is what we build and what it costs.
